A small percentage of the exhaust gas is recirculated externally, cooled and then
fed back into the combustion chamber. This process reduces the amount of nitrogen
oxide in the exhaust gas. The lower levels of particulate matter required by Euro
5 legislation are reduced by means of the patented MAN PM-KAT filter, or by a diesel
oxidation catalyst, depending upon truck model.
Watch our video presentation explaining how our EGR technology works.
In the PM-KAT filter particulates are separated by deliberate creation of turbulence
when exhaust gas is directed into the separator, and by passage through the sintered
metal fleece. The disintegration of the particulates deposited in the fleece is
the result of a permanent chemical reaction which is brought about with the aid
of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the oxidation catalyst.
No, the PM-KAT is a maintenance free unit which has been designed to last the life
of the engine.
