When do the new exhaust gas directives apply?

Euro 5 is effective from 1st October 2009 for all newly registered vehicles.

What is selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and how does it work?

The exhaust gases are mixed with AdBlue (a urea solution) to form ammonia which is passed through an SCR catalyser within the main silencer. The catalyst helps attain reduction rates of up to 90% resulting in cleaner emissions to meet Euro 5 standards.

Watch our video presentation explaining how our SCR technology works.

How long has MAN been using SCR technology?

Development of the MAN SCR system began back in the late 1990s, and it was introduced into series production for mainland Europe in 2004.

What is exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) and how does it work?

A small percentage of the exhaust gas is recirculated externally, cooled and then fed back into the combustion chamber. This process reduces the amount of nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas. The lower levels of particulate matter required by Euro 5 legislation are reduced by means of the patented MAN PM-KAT filter, or by a diesel oxidation catalyst, depending upon truck model.

Watch our video presentation explaining how our EGR technology works.

How does the PM-KAT function?

In the PM-KAT filter particulates are separated by deliberate creation of turbulence when exhaust gas is directed into the separator, and by passage through the sintered metal fleece. The disintegration of the particulates deposited in the fleece is the result of a permanent chemical reaction which is brought about with the aid of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in the oxidation catalyst.

Will the PM-KAT require periodic maintenance?

No, the PM-KAT is a maintenance free unit which has been designed to last the life of the engine.

Does the EGR system require the addition of the AdBlue chemical in order to function correctly?

No, the EGR system does not require the addition of any chemicals to achieve Euro 5 emissions.

How long has MAN been using EGR technology?

EGR is proven technology and has been used successfully by MAN since the introduction of Euro 3 emissions legislation in 2000.
